Sea levels are rising, coastal beach towns are sinking. Even my favorite city, Bangkok, is sinking. That actually depresses me quite a bit, the thought of losing Bangkok under a pool of brown murky city water. Once these cities go under you know that water isn’t going to be clean. I might be onto something with daring people to surf the Great Santa Monica Shitwave of 2021. Maybe this is becoming the new normal, we will eventually have to adapt as surfers like we always do and brave these new conditions. So I’d like to bring forth my thoughts on the Moon Wobble and how it relates to surfing.
NASA just released some studies and calculations relating to the Moon Wobble cycle that occurs every 18.6 years. The Moon has a naturally caused wobble in it’s orbit that was first reported in 1782. The technical term for this wobble is actually a libration. Which is caused from the Moon being tidally locked with Earth. Causing us to only see one of the faces of the moon. Due to orbital mechanisms the exact face that we are looking at may change to a detectable degree. Please note, I actually really don’t know for a fact if this is the same wobble that is being mentioned. I just read a few articles on what the fuck the Moon Wobble is. It is funny how a lot of the news articles just completely glance over what it is. You can decipher it yourself from people that didn’t drop out of college to become a rockstar or surfer that keeps it real.
Anyways, the next extreme tide wobble cycle will occur in the mid 2030s. This period will bring higher tides, and lower low tides. Which sounds pretty exciting from a surfing standpoint. Will I be surfing through downtown Sukhumvit Road Bangkok in 2035? Fuck it, I’ll give it a shot. Either a fish board or a SUP surfboard will do the trick I suppose. I’ve seen people already jet skiing through Bangkok when the road floods. So maybe even a tow in might work.
Health and safety precautions will need to be laid. I would hate to fall in the tropical shitty city waters. Some sort of lightweight scuba mask air system will need to be developed. Or just scuba goggles will due the trick. As long as you protect the ears, nose, and eyes you might be fine. Just don’t forget to close your mouth and have a lot of Listerine and vodka on deck. You’ll have to look out for those sneaky monitor lizards and maybe an occasional escaped zoo anaconda, croc, alligator, or caiman.
With the already rising ocean levels this Moon Wobble will have a huge effect on the currently existing breaks as well. It’ll be interesting what the sweat spot for tidal activity will be in the 2030’s. Will we even notice? I hope so. I like to be an optimistic about the future. We will change and adapt just like what we did in 2020. Many things got revolutionized. The work from home culture and the shutdown on nightlife has made people like me venture out into the waves once again. All the telecommunication tech is finally catching up it seems like. What it needed was a human induced natural disaster. Will the next generation be poorer than us. Probably. Will they have better tech and better surfboards. Probably. I read a good line today. I will modify it slightly as the original was too peaches and roses for me. So here’s some motivational quote for you pornstuds out there, “we can afford anything with in reason but, no one can afford everything.” Just let that simmer in your head for a bit. With the total collapse of this era of relatively stable climate, we can still afford and count on having a little of fun in the waves. Maybe just for a little bit longer.
